The German Emirati Institute (GEI) is fostering international exchange in space research through its collaboration with the Space Technology & Innovation Lab of Khalifa University (KU) in Abu Dhabi.
Three students from KU are actively participating in the feasibility study for the German microsatellite DIEGOSat, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a highly innovative research environment. The project is funded by the Government of Northrhine-Westfalia and led by the Ruhr University Bochum, in cooperation with University of Bonn, and several leading German SME partners, combining scientific excellence and industrial expertise to develop practical solutions that bridge research and application.
The students are learning how a project is structured and documented according to ECSS standards (European Cooperation for Space Standardization), preparing technical documents, defining scientific requirements, and developing data products and potential applications (use cases) for the United Arab Emirates. The results of this first phase will form the basis for the next stage, involving the construction of the satellite and the development of the complete ground segment, including mission control, data processing, and communication, with students from the UAE continue participating in these subsequent phases.
Through this collaboration, the GEI strengthens its role as a bridge between German high-tech expertise and Emirati innovation potential, providing young talents from the UAE with practical experience and the opportunity to contribute to a cutting-edge European space project.
